Mel Gibson and Muslims
Mel Gibson's film, "The Passion of the Christ" drew much media attention when critics charged it with potential for fostering "anti-Semitism", or hatred of Jews. This controversy has given rise to an interesting twist of events in the Muslim world. Apparently, Muslims are watching "The Passion" in record numbers. Generally speaking, Muslims don't care very much for Jews, and the report that "The Passion" is anti-Semitic has made many Muslims want to see the film.
Shortly after the movie opened in the United Arab Emirates, the manager of Cinestar Theatres in Dubai said, "We have had five sold-out shows so far, and we are expecting nearly 3,000 people to attend today's shows. The movie is definitely going to be a huge hit here and may even set new records" (Khaleej Times, UAE). That has proven to be the case. The film has broken box office records in Egypt, Qatar, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (Reuters). Saudi Arabia apparently has no movie theatres, but bootleg DVDs of the film are selling like hotcakes (BBC News).
All this is quite remarkable since "The Passion" is an account of the sufferings and crucifixion of Christ, while Islam teaches that Jesus never died on a cross at all. In many places where "The Passion" is being shown, it is difficult or even illegal to the share the Good News of Jesus Christ on a personal basis. Also, many Muslims consider it offensive to depict a prophet in picture or film. To this day, the animated Disney film "Prince of Egypt" is banned in Egypt for portraying the Prophet Moses (Christian Science Monitor).
So what will be the outcome in the hearts of Muslims? It's probably too soon to say. I have noticed that for the first time, "passion" has been used as a searchword in our online Bible adapted for Muslim readers. Some Muslims are trying to find out more about Jesus Christ as a result of this film. PRAY that God will open the eyes and hearts of many Muslims during these days.
To Go To Togo
Lord willing, George will travel to Togo, Africa in August. He has been invited to advise and teach the ABWE missionary team there as they consider a future outreach. Funds are needed for airfare and associated expenses. If you would like to give towards this endeavour, your donation will be gratefully received. Gifts can be sent to ABWE marked "George King Ministry".
Family News
Karen continues to have a language ministry with several individuals, including a Hindu lady whose sons now attend our church's AWANA program for children. Adam (21) and Amy (19) just returned from a great weekend visit to Michigan to renew friendships with MKs they grew up with in Bangladesh. They are both coming near to the end of their college year, which brings such niceties as term papers and final exams. Lisa (17) and Angie (14) are preparing for a mission trip to Mexico this summer. If you would like more information, please contact us personally. George hopes to take Aaron (16) with him to Togo this summer (at our expense). Aaron is excited at the prospect. Be in prayer for each of the 5 King children. Your prayers have been effective in their lives.
We thank God for you,
George for all
